CONTEXT
During recent years, the pandemic reinforced major shifts in payments behavior: declining cash usage, migration from in-store to online commerce and adoption of instant payments.
In addition to this, as retailers and digital commerce have elevated their competitive position, they have also started moving from traditional credit-card solutions to pursue deepened customer engagement leveraging new payment options.
At the ETHOnline hackathon, our team focused on building a project designed to enhance the payment experience within the restaurant sector.

PROBLEM
Legacy systems in banking charge high fees to merchants and users.
To receive digital payments, merchant businesses pay a considerable amount in credit card processing fees. While guests or users need to provide their personal data and meet financial requirements in order to obtain a credit or debit card from a regular bank institution. Besides, they can also be charged with extra fees for using these systems or for making withdrawals abroad.

We present the Crypto Restaurant Wallet & Loyalty Platform, that allows merchants to receive crypto payments from their guests. This seamless system takes into account privacy concerns when using peer-2-peer payment technology.

As an incentive for guests to use our platform, we created the non-monetary CRW Loyalty Token. This will be distributed to the foodie for completing actions like: settling bill in crypto, writing a review, sharing a picture of their meal, etc.
CRW, like airline miles, will have a redemption process and purchasing option. Guests can simply pay in the loyalty token instead of using crypto, and they can also buy CRW or earn them as they dine at our partnered restaurants.

We opted to use a horizontal menu bar at the bottom to easily guide the user through the app features.

The design seeks to create a polite and friendly interaction between the user and the app by using clear text and instructions.
Whether the user is new to the platform or a frequent visitor, the UI text was carefully crafted and written to ensure clarity, usability, and a positive user experience.

Color contrast accessibility
Excepting for the Log in screens, we applied a dark background to the app that contrasts with the color accents, bringing the user's focus to the text and actionable elements.
To select the accent tones, we chose a bright series of colors that are visually equidistant, which is hugely important for data visualization in the app.

Final results
After the progress and feedback obtained at the end of this hackathon, the CRW project had a defined roadmap to follow for the next months.
The platform is scheduled for testing in multiple cities worldwide, coinciding with major tech events, to assess its performance with target users and establish partnerships with local restaurants and merchants.
Next steps
We realized the project was still facing several technical difficulties coming to solving the platform integration with crypto technologies.
For this reason, I considered it would be worthwhile to develop a similar payment solution addressed not only to crypto users, but also accessible to regular credit and debit card users.

To continue improving the project I conducted interviews with 10 participants, consisting of 5 experienced crypto users and 5 conventional payment users.
For my target group, I looked for regular travelers who often journey abroad to gather feedback on their payment preferences and pain points they usually experience as tourists.
